We are pleased to announce that we are organizing a special OFFLINE summer workshop called "Logical Fallacies and Cognitive Biases". This is a unique workshop where we will explore the different types of logical fallacies and cognitive biases that influence the way we think and make decisions in everyday life.
Summer workshop "Logical errors and cognitive biases
⌛When? August 7 - 11 (16:00 - 18:00)
🈴Format? OFFLINE, in Bucharest
🎯The group? High school, grades 9 - 12
But what are logical errors and cognitive biases?
Logical fallacies of argumentation are the mistakes we make in the process of formulating arguments. We are often tempted to use argumentative tactics that seem convincing but are in reality flawed and inconclusive. These fallacies may include hasty generalization, circular reasoning, false causation, or ad hominem argument. Understanding these errors allows us to recognize weak arguments and build stronger, more valid arguments.
On the other hand, cognitive biases are preconceived judgments or mindsets that influence our thinking process and decision-making. These biases can be the result of past experiences, social influences, or belief systems. They can lead to errors in the perception and interpretation of information, such as the "confirmation effect" - the tendency to seek out and give more importance to information that supports our existing opinions. By becoming aware of these biases, we can try to overcome them and make more balanced and informed decisions.
Logical reasoning errors and cognitive biases have a significant impact in our society. They can influence public discourse, decision-making processes and even social policies. By understanding these concepts, we can become more aware of how our thinking works and how these influences can affect society as a whole.
What will we learn in this workshop?
The workshop is designed for high school students between the ages of 13 - 19 and provides a step-by-step guide exploring these fascinating concepts. We will use practical examples and exercises and lots of fun activities!
1. We will analyze the conversations and discussions we have with friends, family or schoolmates and look for these logical fallacies hidden behind the arguments. Thus, we will become more aware and be able to express our opinions in a more clear and coherent way.
2. We will also explore cognitive biases, which are our mindsets or judgments that can lead to errors in our decision making.
3. We will discover how certain biases, such as the "confirmation effect" or "groupthink" and how they act in society
4. We will work as a team, have lively discussions and share unique ideas and perspectives.
What does a young participant gain in this workshop?
At the end of the workshop, a young person has a better understanding of logical fallacies and cognitive biases, as well as:
Ability to recognize and avoid them.
A good background in analyzing the information and arguments surrounding
